New York program:
Travel, Meals, and Accommodation

Travel: The session will take place at the home of Teresa Dybvig in Stony Brook, NY. We will email directions within a couple of weeks before the session.

If you travel by air, the closest airport is the Long Island/Islip Macarthur Airport (ISP), which is about a half hour from Stony Brook. Airline information is on the site. The Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express (more below) is the only local hotel whose shuttle serves the Islip Airport, but you can rent a car or take an affordable taxi from the airport (Village Taxi, price list here). You can also fly into JFK International Airport. The best thing about flying in or out of JFK is that you can take the straightforward and easily navigated Airtrain straight to Long Island Railroad's Jamaica Station for just $5 each way. Once at Jamaica Station, you can take the Long Island Rail Road (more details below) to Stony Brook, a train ride of about an hour. From the Stony Brook train station, you can take a shuttle to either of the local hotels mentioned under accommodation. You can also fly into La Guardia Airport. Unfortunately, there is no Airtrain from La Guardia to Jamaica Station, but sometimes you can take a taxi to Jamaica Station without too much bother.

You can find schedules and fares for the Long Island Rail Road at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Click first on Schedules, then on Long Island Rail Road. This will take you to a form. In the form, select "From Station" Jamaica and "To Station" Stony Brook. The June schedule will not be available until closer to the date, but until then you can check schedules for the day of the week you plan to travel. They usually remain similar.

Accommodation: The Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express has offered us a group discount that covers check-in on June 26 through checkout on July 1. The price comes out to $166/night for either single or double, which is fantastic for summer on Long Island. To access our group discount, click here, or call 800-HOLIDAY and give them our Group Code, "WBP". Please note: only 5 rooms are set aside for us, and the cutoff rate for the group discount is May 26. Their shuttle serves the Stony Brook train station and Long Island Macarthur Airport in Islip, and will take you to and from area restaurants on June 26. You will need a car or taxi service to travel a few miles to and from Well-Balanced Pianist activities. The hotel has a pool and provides a hot breakfast in the mornings.

Another nearby hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn Stony Brook. They offer no discounted rate and limited shuttle service. The main advantage of this hotel is that it is only a 20-minute walk to and from Well-Balanced Pianist New York events.

If you want to search online for other accommodation options, the Stony Brook zip code is 11790.

Meals: We will have coffee and munchies for you in the mornings. Salad and sandwich lunches and simple dinners are included in your fee.

Students say

"Before studying with Teresa Dybvig, I had studied with several prominent teachers of the Taubman Technique for nine years. Although I made some progress, it was not until I started studying with Terry that my technique finally came together... Terry helped me regain my proper posture and hand shape... Terry not only was able to balance my body; her focus is always on musical expression. She has a unique gift of balancing the teaching of technical skills with the expression of music. I am finally beginning to be where I want to be in my piano playing. I am convinced that this is due to Terry's high quality teaching."

"I write to express my appreciation to the Westside YMCA for offering the Feldenkrais Movement Class. After having spent considerable time over the past ten years studying various forms of movement and going through various “neuroses”over what type of body I need to develop, I have found the Feldenkrais work to be of the utmost help in teaching me how to reach goals that are really valuable--developing a body that is pliant and receptive. I’m just now only beginning to tap into the “intelligence of my body”. Throughout my formal education, which covered elitist private schools, graduation from a public state university with a degree in Theater, and very expensive professional actor training programs in New York City, I have had countless classes on how to get my body “looking” lean and tight (including aerobics, modern dance, and ballet), and other classes on how to express myself succinctly and directly, but never a class on allowing my own body to be my teacher! On the other hand, in the Westside YMCA’s Feldenkrais, I am in an environment where the instructor, Sharon Oliensis, gives us a step-by-step technique to develop a highly sensitized connection between the mind and body. Through this vastly unique type of work I am now learning about my body in a way that is not directed at how others view me or on the “aesthetic” lines/cuts that my body will exude, but I am experiencing my body from the inside out, starting with the body’s real life-force, the breath. I thank the Westside YMCA for offering this very specific and vital class. It’s really about helping me discover who I am. - NYC Actor
